Washington Square Arch
An arch designed
by Stanford White for
our first
Commander in Chief to commemorate the 100th anniversary
of his inauguration as our first President - when New York City was the
first capital of
the United States.
The original arch was temporary, made of plaster and wood, and in the middle of Fifth Avenue just above Washington Square North (Waverly Place / 6th Street). But it was rebuilt in marble in Washington Square Park, on the other side of the street. Buses drove through the arch and went around the fountain in the middle of the park before continuing back up 5th Avenue until 1958.
